A premature baby is baby which born before the 37th week of pregnancy. Premature birth occurs in between 8 percent to 10 percent of all pregnancies in the United States. Because they are born too early, premature baby weigh much less than full-term babies.
A premature birth gives a baby less time to develop and mature in the womb. The result is an increased risk of various medical and developmental problems, including trouble breathing and bleeding in the brain. If you go into labor too early, your doctor may try to delay your baby’s birth. Even if premature birth is inevitable, a few extra days in the womb can promote significant development.
They may have health problems because their organs did not have enough time to develop. Premature baby need special medical care in a neonatal intensive care unit, or NICU. They stay there until their organ systems can work on their own.
Premature birth is a serious health problem. Premature babies are at increased risk for newborn health complications, such as breathing problems, and even death.
Premature babies also face an increased risk of lasting disabilities, such as mental retardation, learning and behavioral problems, cerebral palsy, lung problems and vision and hearing loss. Two recent studies suggest that premature babies may be at increased risk of symptoms associated with autism (social, behavioral and speech problems).
