Healing is slowed if there is any delay in blood reaching the colon and healing tissue. During surgery, there are two important factors to assure adequate blood flow to healing areas: first there just be enough fluid for blood in the body so that the body does not need to restrict blood flow to only vital organs such as the liver, kidneys, and brain.
To be certain there is enough fluid for blood, the anesthesiologist must give sufficient fluids during the operation. More important, you do not want to come to surgery dehydrated. As noted previously, alcohol and exercise dehydrate you, so it is better to have very little alcohol for several days before any operation and do not exercise the day of your surgery.
