Gestational diabetes mellitus is defined as glucose intolerance that begins, or is first recognized, during pregnancy, which is one of the most common medical problem affecting pregnant woman
GDM affects 1.1% –14.3% of the pregnant population in the USA, depending on the ethnic or racial composition of the population studied and on the diagnostic criteria used. Canadian data from National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth indicate that 6.5% of women reported “pregnancy diabetes” in their most recent pregnancy. In Indonesia the incidence of GDM about 1,9 – 3,6%
All patients should have a clinical or ultrasound estimate fetal weight (EFW) within 2 weeks of estimated delivery date. Decisions regarding route of delivery need to involve appropriate counseling regarding risks and consequences of shoulder dystocia as well as risks associated with cesarean delivery.
