Isosorbid Dinitrate is a nitrat-group drugs. Nitrat is used as a vasodilator. Nitrates, including isosorbide dinitrate, correct the imbalance between the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart and the work that the heart must do by dilating (expanding) the arteries and veins in the body.
Isosorbide relaxes blood vessels allowing more blood to flow through. This reduces the workload on the heart and improves blood flow to the heart. Sublingual isosorbide tablets act quickly to relieve or prevent chest pain .
Isosorbide dinitrate tablets can be taken with or without food.
Dosing :
Tablets: 5-40 mg 2 or 3 times daily
Tablets: (sublingual): 2.5-10 mg
Tablets: (extended-release) and capsules (sustained-release): 40-80 mg once or twice daily.
Watch out for Isosorbid side effect! It can make you have severe blood pressure reduction. You also must tell your doctor if you are using vasodilators for erection problems.

Hi Dr. Loverock,
Thank you for the explanation and caution about isosorbid dinitrate. With all the heart medications people are taking these days, it’s good to be aware of drug interactions.
